This board fence marks the boundary of the wildflower meadow at our place. This is an area that we leave uncut for Spring's early show of wildflowers; mostly in shades of pink, lavender and white.

It amazes me how the sun sets in the west

Packing away Christmas

Knocked myself out yesterday in packing up my Christmas stuff...Got most of it done except dragging the tree out- Chas will have to help with that-bad back or not!!!! I was sooo tired I couldn't get to sleep when I went to bed at 1:00AM...At 3:30 I was still awake... so had to take a prescription sleeping pill. My Melatonin didn't work last night- I guess I was just too tired!! My goodness-couldn't believe it when I looked at the clock when I awoke this morning...10:30!!!! :) But I feel better and am ready to face the day.....and the Rest Of My Life!!

I am reminded of some lyrics from a Dan Fogelberg song...

The song is "Loose Ends."

.."Surrounding myself with possessions, I surely have more than I need...I'm wondering if this is justice hard earned, or simply a matter of greed...."

LOL-

I'm sure Dan was not writing about putting away Christmas decorations...nonetheless...those words came to me!!

These kitties belong to my son and daughter-in-law.

 They are not babies anymore but not yet grown-ups either!

  ( time for that necessary vet visit )

Although they do not look at all alike, they are brother and sister. 

The gray tiger cat is "Ginger" and her black and white brother is "Snap!" 

My son named them for the cookies...Ginger Snaps!  I guess  if he had taken 3 of the litter he might have named them - Snap, Crackle and Pop!
  ( remember the Rice Krispy commercial??)  :)

These are very sweet, friendly and adorable kitties! Both are beautiful!

Meet Miss Kitty!

 She  is part of my daughter's family and the mom of my cat, 'The General!'

She is a strikingly beautiful calico cat!

These are from a few years back. My grand daughter, Alli,  is grown up and away at nursing school now; only gets 'home' occasionally. 

She just went back to Orlando yesterday, from her Christmas break.  I know she misses 'Miss Kitty' and her other Kitty, 'Smudge' and her doggie, 'Cooper.'

~My Poinsettias-after the freeze~

 I was doing this post for Ruby Tuesday but when I went to link up to that blog- (Mary the Teach at Work of the Poet)- she announced there that she's ending the weekly Meme of Ruby Tuesday!

I had my RT post ready so I will go ahead with it anyway! 

~~

As I have mentioned before, we are a little too far north in Fl for Poinsettias to make it through the cold we are sure to get...

Although the plants usually do make it, the freezing temps are sure to come when the plant is at it's most beautiful stage with the showy flowers in bloom, and the flowers are instantly zapped by the freezing temps!

 The aim we have and the best we can hope for is to have our flowers in bloom at Christmas.

I accomplished that with a few bushes around our place and especially this one that I had planted last year in our front courtyard.

Last night's freezing temps ended it's glorious display  for this year...

 Well, not completely. Notice in the picture the one flower not affected. It's on the same bush with the others that are hanging limp and wasted.  It's in the front, too, and not in a protected place at all.

That is weird and I don't understand...

But I'm not complaining.  I'll enjoy looking at it a little while longer!

New Years good luck food!!

Every New Years Day we have the traditional southern meal for good luck; black eyed peas cooked with hog jowl. We also have  turnip greens or mustard greens, also cooked with the hog jowl for seasoning.

Charles always makes cornbread 

to go with this . (the best in the world!!) For our meal today we also cooked a pork roast and a pot of rutabagas!

UMMM...It was all yummy....and.. best of all it will bring good luck to all who eat this!

;)

 We made sure our kids and grands in Ocala ate some of our food today. 

 Tina, Dan, Brian and Alli came up and shared our good luck meal.

Chris and Joy had to stop by later to have what I had saved for them.

Better safe than sorry, kiddos!

My Christmas Flowers- and-"Happy New Year to All."

Poinsettias are a challenge to grow here in N. Fl because we usually have too much cold but I still try to save the plants that I buy each Christmas season. The one shown behind me in the pic where I'm seated is one I planted from last Christmas. It is beautiful and bloomed just at the right time! I will plant those new ones in pots on the table, in the spring-and hope they survive for next Christmas. They are SOOO worth it for me!

The rest of the story...Christmas season 2011-'Our Family.' ( for family)

I'm thankful for having one more Christmas season with all of my family together.  I realize how blessed I am, that we've been able to spend our holidays together, all through the years.

There were a lot of roadblocks in getting it all together this year - mainly, the health and stamina of the 'old folks'... but somehow we managed.

 After the trip to NY with my girls- over Thanksgiving- I was tired...and it took a few days to get back to normal. I was running late with all the things I try to do for our Christmas celebrating...I realized I would not be able to do all the things I always want to do in decorating the house, baking, shopping... etc...I tried, tho,  and did the best I could.

 Charles is  a treasure in my life - solid gold, some might say! ( I would, in fact!)

 After Christmas Eve, and a dinner and  gathering with the biggest part of our family- I found myself truly exhausted...and didn't feel I could face doing a turkey and dressing from scratch  as we  always do...We had a ham cooked and ready for Christmas day....but we also had a thawed turkey that had to be got in the oven early, so as to be ready by the time our other family/guests drove up from Orlando.

  Charles (bless his heart) said he would take care of getting the turkey and dressing on, early on Christmas morning! He did just that! 

 I honestly could not have done it - that's how exhausted I was!  We would have just had ham...and, although the ham was great...Christmas for us means Turkey and cornbread dressing and ALL the trimmings! :)

  Charles saved the day!  lol- Because I was more rested I felt up to making a banana pudding and I felt good about that! The girls brought dishes and desserts too. 

The end result was an excellent dinner, enjoyed by each and every one of us!

Since some couldn't be here for Christmas Eve we changed our routine of opening our gifts to Christmas Day. We did that after our meal! A grand time was had by one and all .  It was a happy time for everyone.

Things were a little different this time but life is about changes...and I,  more than most,  need to realize that and go with life's changing scene. 

Speaking of changes...Next Christmas we will once again have a  little child in our Christmas celebrating...By Christmas, Christopher and Joy's baby will be about 7 mo. old! They've been told the baby is a boy!! What fun that will be  :)  I can hardly wait! Another little grandson - how COOL is that!  ;)

Santa- by mistake, I'm sure- left his hat at my house on Christmas Eve...

(I DO hope he had another one in his sleigh  so that he was able to make it back to the North Pole  with his ears kept toasty warm!)

...And I hope dear Santa doesn't mind that I decided to wear that plush and warm hat all day on Christmas!

It kept me in a festive mood as Charlie and I prepared the feast...

 ...and later as we opened gifts!

I can see why Santa prefers that bright , red, fur trimmed, velvet hat to all others!

It's touched with a kind of magic!

He's probably not anything so special to most observers! I got him at Wal-Mart one year in the 'after Christmas' mark down sales!

I simply call it the 

"Christmas Flower!"

These beautiful flowers have always been an essential addition to my Christmas decorating!

Every year we buy a few in pots, for the house, and after the holidays, plant them at our place here in Ocala, Fl.

 The climate is not ideal but we manage to have a few grow and bloom each time. This one that I am posing by is planted in our front entrance garden.

 This seems to be a good location, as it's an enclosed courtyard. The plants are better protected here, and I can take care of them better with remembering to water and clip and feed!

They are worth the effort!

Mom's Christmas flowers-2011

The month of December is 'getting on with it,' and I'm falling behind with everything - even more so than usual! 

  I decided I needed to get Mom's Christmas flowers out  today, before time completely got away from me!  Charles was happy and willing to take me, and we had an enjoyable time together, though, of course, it was shadowed with some sadness.  Still, I felt better, having brightened that little spot up for this holiday!

On the way out we were riding behind this

 ' Country Redneck's' pickup!

  We got a kick out of this elaborately decorated truck,  but I was only able to get a good look and picture of the back!

It's interesting and often, amusing,  to see the diversity of people! What turns one person on, another may find silly or trite...or a total waste of money!

Oh well, I'm not much of a pick-up kind of person anyway...well lighted and decorated, or not!!

Without the NY subways it would not have been possible for us to  see and do all the things we did in 4 days... at least, not possible for the senior lady in the group!

My daughter, Tina, did a lot of research and planning  before our trip and she knew exactly where we were at any given time and knew which subway we'd need to take to get to where we wanted to go....and how far the walk would be to get to the subway station!  My girl is truly amazing!

(On the other hand-I was lost the whole time I was there...I just left it to the girls to figure things out!)

We found riding the subways a fun experience....lol- not at all like it is so often shown  to be in movies or TV shows; with unsavory characters running through all the connected cars with guns!  :)  We did see some interesting guys, though,  entertaining the passengers with their music - a wide variety!

This one act we got a picture of was fun!!  :)

We saw 2 or 3 others during our rides around the city!

Being there was a surreal experience. I kept trying to imagine what that day had been like...the images I had seen on the news shows came flooding back. It was an emotional and sobering sight- reading the names of some of the ones lost that day...seeing how the names go on and on around  the monument.

Seeing the survivor tree that was saved from the rubble and nurtured back to health and replanted on the site is a fitting reminder of how life goes on for us-just as the buildings going up there are a reminder of how we strive to rise above our loss.

May God bless our country and those lost on that day, and all the families and friends left to grieve!

Statue of Liberty

The 9-11 Memorial site and the Statue of Liberty  were the two things I had looked forward to most of all on our trip to NY.  We were able to  accomplish both,  but on different days!

Both required high security checks of visitors, the same as boarding checks at the airports.

 The lines were long to get in (both places) but we didn't mind . These places were always at the top of our 'must see' list.

LOL-OK-I'll do this for a couple days!

This was me in the 80's- in my most fun role in life-so far!!

This pic was 1985-with my first 2 'grands,' Dan and Brian!' These 2 guys are what started the whole adventure of being 'Ginga!'
(or grandma for most ppl!) They were sooo precious...but not any more so than my others who came later- grandson, Zach and granddaughter, Allison! And- lucky me...in about 6 mo. I will have another grandchild; after 21 years! How's that for starting over!! :)

Cara Mia ~ a different kind of Thanksgiving meal for me!

We had our traditional kind of Thanksgiving meal at home on Sunday before Tina, Alli and I left for our NY trip on Tuesday. Our turkey, and all the rest, turned out just about perfect!  So no one was cheated out of our usual holiday meal! (and I didn't feel guilty)

In NY we had a different kind of  Thanksgiving dinner...We ate at this Italian restaurant!.  Not sure exactly what I had but it was a really yummy pasta dish.

Alli was the one with the camera that night and she only made pictures of the people!  :)

Robyn and Ken  are from our town and they just happened to be on a trip to NY  over Thanksgiving , too!

 Tina and Robyn went through nursing school together and Alli, at age 4, was the flower girl in Robyn and Ken's wedding! :) 

  ( Now that little girl ~ our Alli ~ is in nursing school, herself; following in her mom's footsteps! ) 

...Anyway, the funny thing about meeting up with these friends was like this... Tina and Robyn had, by chance, run into each other while working in the hospital recently...and the plans for  both the trips had been mentioned. Robyn thought it would be fun to meet-up and pretend ( with Ken) that it was not a prearranged plan when we all  turned up there at Cara Mia!  (so far away from our homes here in Ocala)   :)  It turned out to be a fun couple of  hours over an excellent dinner.

 Surprise! Surprise, Ken!!  :)

 By the time we walked the few blocks back to our hotel I was ready to call it a day! It had been a long and full one- having done the parade watching and also going to Central Park (and who knows what all else?) and then going to dinner!

Tina and Alli, though, went out for more exploring of the Big Apple!!

I slept well that night!!

We spent time in Macy's and Penn Station...the others we just  got an outside  view!

(wish I could have seen a "WHO" concert in MSG) ;(

 We wanted to be able to go to the top of 'Empire,' but we ran out of time!  :(

 Oh, well, maybe next time!  :) I'm sure there will be a next time for my girls but probably not for me!

...But I DO have a picture from the top from my 1982 visit!  Look closely and you can see the twin towers.

This board fence marks the boundary of the wildflower meadow at our place. This is an area that we leave uncut for Spring's early show of wildflowers; mostly in shades of pink, lavender and white.

Our granddaughters (My sister,Joy's and mine)at age 2...What a fun day!!

Ma-Ma had more little pink flowers than she knew what to do with! ;)

Our little girls are grown up now, and their great-grandmother is no longer with us here in this world...

Oh! But we had some good times, all together, in those days. We will always have the sweet memories!
