Our very big Staghorn Fern!
I visited Jeanette's blog today and enjoyed seeing more of her backyard plants!
She has a beautiful Elkhorn fern...and we have what we call a Staghorn Fern! They look much the same to me but I suppose there are some differences! I need to do some research on both names!
Anyway, our fern is huge! It is easily 8x8 ft. We brought it from Miami 19 years ago and we had , had it there for at least 10 years before we moved.
We have this fern growing on a center ball of spagnum moss-and the 'pups' were attached all around! Requires very little care! I think being planted with the center ball it doesn't tend to dry out- even if we neglect to water it often. And the more spagnum you add, the bigger it will grow! I feed it banana peels sometimes! :)
Sometimes the frost of winter here sets it back but it puts on again very quickly! We try to remember to cover it if we expect a frost!

Wow, that's a big, beautiful fern Junie! My mom used to grow Staghorns in Australia. Now I'm curious to know whether there's a difference between the two.

Good grief! I can't imagine the disappointment when the Who show was cancelled, and after that awful trip. I hope you have a wonderful time when you finally get to see them.

I'm hoping to get to see The Who on the 25th.....however, they have cancelled 2 shows since our show on the 13th. It will depend on if Roger recovers- or NOT! So far they haven't cancelled the make up show for us!...just 5 more days to go!
We had a lovely time with the grands and kids-although not all the family could be here! I miss having little ones! Seems like they grew up much too soon!

We've almost gotten down to freezing here. When that happens I make a vow to move to the Bahamas, lol. Beautiful pics. I love the Magnolias here but miss the Dogwood of the Ozarks

...but we DO have dogwood trees here! I posted some pics from my yard! I have a Magnolia too, but it has never bloomed! :(

Hi Junie. Thanks for the visit and the link. that is one beautifull staghorn.I posted some of my Stags in december archines and will post another large stag soon. Stags grow pups the Elk you have to chop up to start a new plant. I also feed them bannana skins and the used tea leaves or bags.and the frost does knock them about.Love the plants in your world also. take care happy gardening.

WELL- so they ARE different! They look pretty much the same- but Charlie said there's a difference-
Stags are very tropical looking- but they do ok where we are- even tho we do usually get some frost...One year ours really got killed back- but came right back when it warmed up again.

I've read all your posts I missed...oh dear, what a surprise you had to learn you will need cataract surgery eventually! Yes- I was very surprised to know I need cataract surgery on my eyes. And I guess it should be soon as I'm having trouble seeing as well as I did. (I expected to be able to get new glasses...but the doctor said there's no way to help me except the surgery.) I know ppl have great success with that these days so I'm trying to just get used to the idea and not to worry about it! Have to just go ahead and do it soon.
My Staghorn Fern: Isn't it a fantastic plant!! It's so huge!!

That is one Big A$$ fern!
Ooops! My language got a bit tawdry. :-O
I mean, that is one Big Bohunkus fern!!!
LOL- Just Jamie Dawn speak!! haha
But that Big A$$ description probably fits well- as it IS worh a lot of $$$, I would think!! Not that we would ever want to sell it! Too much family history connected with it!

The house I rented (not the one I'm in now) had a huuuge staghorn growing on the side of a tree. I have a few photos of it and will try to remember to put it on one of my future posts.

I have done that in the past for other people but never kept any too long for myself!
