Camera Critters-May 19, 2012-

~~

~~

A couple days ago my husband and I were riding the golf cart on the next street over from our place, when we came upon this scene.

(from Wikipedia)
The Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) is a bird found throughout most of the Americas. It is also known in some North American regions as the turkey buzzard (or just buzzard), and in some areas of the Caribbean as the John crow or carrion crow.

This is not one of my favorite birds to watch but this time I zoomed in on him to see what he was up to!
This is what I saw!

 (cleaning up the roadkill)

~~

...and he says...

"It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it!"
~~

As I was writing this post I got to wondering where that quote originated. I was unable to find the origin of the quote with all my searches.
Do any of you know?

Today's Update

Update on my day!

Lol-a very busy day.
This is my 3rd. post of today!

Today I posted this on my Facebook page

...and this picture...

~~~
June Kellum Just found in my washing machine!!! Not kidding!! :( How did that snake get in there and HOW did it survive going through a wash and rinse- PLUS a spin cycle!! Geesh! I like snakes just fine- but NOT in my washing machine! Charles, of course, made a joke of it! It is a harmless red-rat snake (he said)...but I picked it up...thinking it was a cord or something...
~~~

Yes! It's true - and I'm not a happy girl tonight!

I'm bombing the room with some Fogger Bombs in hopes of getting rid of any little varmints that might still be in there!
I don't know what else to do. Any ideas out there?

Mellow Yellow Monday~Feb 23, 2009

It's Mellow Yellow Monday again!

Snakes!

Living in the country we have snake encounters occasionally.

It's a good idea to know which are the good guys! :)
Once you learn to identify the poisonous snakes of your world, then you are free to enjoy and explore the rest of them-up close!
(Even the poisonous ones are interesting - but at a safe distance!)

Snakes are fascinating creatures to me and I'm always thrilled when we happen to meet one around our place. This usually happens a few times every year.
I'm looking forward to summer! ;)

( a couple of snakes here - with some yellow color)

Project Black #10 ~ Snake

This is my Project Black post # 10.

~for more black posts go here!~

I saw this guy last year when I was doing some gardening work. This is a black Indigo snake and I knew he was non poisonous so I wasn't afraid to move in close...

( OOPS...Charles just told me this snake looks like a Black Racer..... I thought
not- because it didn't Race Away real fast like they usually do!
Anyway-
no black snakes in Fl are poisonous, I have read!)

He was more afraid of me than I was of him and I knew he wouldn't hang around for long.
I quickly went to get my camera and got a few pictures of him on this log before he slithered away!

I always like these unexpected encounters with the the critters that share our world.

Don't you? :)

Easter family day (and Dan's birthday )

...As it turned out- this was a long day for me.

** I had one of those horrid nights of sleeplessness last night. I got to bed and to sleep around 1:30 but awoke at 4:30 and couldn't get back to sleep. SO-no choice but to get up and start my day at that early hour and on about 3 hours of sleep! Oh well- that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes...**

Anyway, though tired, I managed to put it all together (with a lot of help from C. ) and all the family came and we had a very good time!

Some pics of our day:

Alli found this Yellow Rat Snake in their back yard! Lol- As you can see she was not at all afraid of it. Brian and Zach found it interesting , too! Dan was into his own thing and didn't pay much attention to it!... Even the old 'Ginga' got up enough nerve to hold it! Tina did too!
( We ARE country girls, ya know !)
The colors are beautiful in these snakes... They feel velvety smooth when you hold them- and strong!

Zach decided he wanted to take it home with him so Charles gave him a big - wire covered - aquarium to keep it in. He will probable turn it loose after awhile, though!

After the adventures with the snake we had our very good food-and lots of goodies. Tina had made cupcakes in honor of Dan's birthday and Tam brought me a pretty Daffodil candy dish, filled with several fancy candies!

Some pics of our family - doing our day! :)
LOL- some of the pictures we messed up so bad with the lighting , I converted them to B & W!
Pics are always fun so I keep most of them- however bad they are!

( Chris was also here but not in the pictures -
He was getting ready to go to his job! )

It was a good day here. Hope you all had a good Easter day!

Love,

Junie

Another snake surprise!

Another snake surprise for me!

As often as I have seen this happen over the years - still each time I'm startled to see a snake curled around my husband's big hands...especially in my house. This time he brought it into the bedroom as I was gathering up laundry for the wash!

With my startled exclamation of "Oh!” he laughed and said,” But I thought you were not afraid of snakes!"

I'm not afraid of them-Really- I'm not! They are just not something I wish to become so cozy with.

Lol- I surprised him by asking to hold the little snake and get a picture of me with it! Here's proof of how brave I am! You can tell I wasn't that relaxed with the situation, though! And the camera lens is fogged up! Oh well! But it's me holding a Red Rat Snake! (Also known as a Corn Snake)

Aren't you all proud of my bravery!! :)

Here is a website with pictures of this and other Rat Snakes.

I soon turned him back over to Charles and he set him free. I got these pictures as the snake quickly slithered away.

~~~
After our snake encounter I did some gardening- clipping and weeding in the roses...
The heat almost did me in! Need to do more but it will have to wait!
~~~

All of you - have a great day!

My visitor today...

In my WAY BACK garden area- this fellow came to visit today... Startled me, momentarily, but I recovered and got a few pics! You can not get very close to a Black Racer, BUT I tried! ;)
