Friday's Fences- (for April 19, 2013) Alabama Horses

These fences might seem flimsy for keeping horses in a pasture- but they work just fine! (electric!!)

Both of these pictures were made in Priceville, Alabama, on

 ( separate) visits to my brother and Sister-in-Law's home. 

These horses are in a pasture next to their place. The little boy and his dad, in the 1st picture, are my nephew and his grandson.  The picture of the man feeding apples to the horses is my brother, Ray!

This is a barn in north Alabama

 ( Mud Bottom area-near the Elk River) 

where my husband grew up.

  It was a neighbor's barn and holds many fond memories for Charles, of times spent hanging out with his brothers and friends here.

 To a country kid,  in those bygone times, a barn like this was a cool place to spend  your leisure time.

This picture is one of many I have taken

 of this barn over the years. 

It amazes me that so many barns in the south are still standing and , in many cases, are still in use. This one in particular is still in good shape...to be 100 years old or older!

I wonder if farm kids of today still  enjoy the simple pleasures of time spent  in and around old barns like this.

I hope they do!

Every year we make a trip to the north Alabama where my husband grew up. I enjoy riding around the countryside and seeing many old barns that still stand. My husband has memories and connections to  a lot of them and, especially, to this one.

This barn is on the land where my husband's family lived  for several years - from the time he was a little guy until he was about age 15 - if I remember correctly!

The area was known as Mud Bottom,located near the Elk River.

The house that they lived in is not there anymore

 (having been replaced years ago with a new one)

  but the surrounding fields still have crops of cotton or corn growing each year and the old barn still stands!

We were in Alabama last month and I saw this  very attractive, flowering bush at a relative's house.

I was unfamiliar with this flower but I was told it is called "Easter Rose."

 The form of the tiny, delicate  pink flowers do resemble miniature roses. 

I thought this would be a perfect pink post for this

 Easter Weekend!

We bought this old fashioned wind -up toy in Alabama.

It's not old but has the look of old toys that I remember from my childhood.

This  little duck rides his bike when you use the big key to wind him up!

Only problem is...the key has somehow been misplaced! 

 :(

Recently we visited relatives in Alabama. Summertime in north Alabama is beautiful with many flowers in bloom! (very HOT, though!) 

This Rose of Sharon bush grows at my sister-in-law's place near Athens, Al!  I love that dark red center and it makes a perfect selection for my Ruby Tuesday post!

 ~

This one grows at my brother and S-I-L's place in Hartselle, Al.  It's bloom is multi-petaled and a dark pink in color.

 

These flowering bushes produce many blooms throughout summer! I enjoy the variety in colors and form of these flowers.

On a recent trip to Alabama I saw this little Ford tractor 'hiding' in this small shed!

  :)

 

Have to admit it would be better protected in a bigger space!

I found this amusing so I snapped a picture.

Only later did I realize how that dark blue contrasts so nicely with the weathered boards of the shed!

I've always loved seeing old barns...well, new ones, too, but the old ones have more charm for me.  I always look for barns to capture in my camera lens on our trips to Alabama.

On a recent trip to Alabama we saw another of those unique, scrap metal roosters.  This is the 4th one I've come across in recent times.  :) I find them amusing and always try to get a picture of them. 

This time we had to back-track, as I didn't see him in time to stop! LOL-My husband didn't mind....well not too much, anyway!

Nothing better (IMHO) than a country breakfast of country ham, fried eggs, biscuits and buttered grits!

On our rides around the country we saw a lot of barns!

Here are a couple of red ones-one very old and one much newer! They all have a special charm for me.

This is an old barn, actually in the city limits of Athens, Al.

This is a newer barn we saw in Snead,Al- after we were on our way back home.

For some reason, water towers always fascinate me and I try to get pictures where ever we go. I especially like to see them  decorated with our flag!
