Boiled Peanuts~ (Goober Peas)

Oh my...here I go again...off on a winding road of trivia and nonsense!

I find it so funny in Internet contacts with people- how we get sent off on searches, with the least prompting...LOL-Well- I do anyway.

I was talking with a friend online yesterday and our conversation somehow got into nuts...(the kinds we like and do not like)...and peanuts came into it, of course. The peanut, as most people know, is not a nut but a member of the Pea family...but is highly used as a nutty snack - and liked a lot!

Being from the south I know about 'Boiled Peanuts', too, but my friend had never heard of them! ...So of course this sent me off on a search, today!

As I suspected, 'Boiled Peanuts' are of the southern states!

I have fond memories and good thoughts about boiled peanuts because my sweet mom loved them. No finer treat could you give her than a bag of boiled peanuts from a roadside fruit and veggie stand!

These are some more country scenes from our recent trip to Alabama!

My husband, Charles, and I enjoy all things country and the highlights of our trips back home to visit the folks are our rides together, out in the country.

The barn scenes were taken at his old home place where he grew up!
The original barn still stands!



The one of me and the tractor is just a 'pretty tractor' that we stopped to admire! :) It was for sale...but-no-we didn't buy it!



The last pictures are of a treasure trove (junk yard) of old farm implements we saw on our way home yesterday!

























Yes! You might say we're kinda weird ...lol- but we're weird in many of the same ways so that makes it fun!

This is a picture of my husband and a friend in 1955. They were temporally assigned to Camp Kilmer, NJ for deployment overseas!

Here they are in NYC-Broadway and 42nd street...a night on the town before being shipped out to Casablanca, French Morocco.

( Charles, age 20 here, is the one on the right...
He is STILL on the RIGHT, too! :) )

This would be a voyage of 9 hard days with most of the men suffering extreme seasickness! The ship they were on was a smaller ship for troop transport...very close quarters; and they were to encounter bad storms on this trip-adding to the dismal conditions.

This was the ship.

USS Private William H. Thomas

After 9 rough days they reached their destination.

This was my husband's first of 4 assignments to this part of the world during his 4 years in the Air Force. ( 2 different bases)

His job in the Air Force was to be as a fire and rescue specialist. Charles quickly rose in rank and became crew chief in charge of a work crew.

During that time period the need arose often for men trained in this kind of operations, as there were frequent plane crashes near and on the base. We (USA) maintained a heavy presence in that part of the world during that time period.

The name of the ship used in transport-USS Private William H. Thomas- caught my attention. I wondered about a ship being named for a Private.

I'm so glad I looked up the information on this!

This is a story that will make you cry (it did both Charles and me) and it will make you so very proud!
