This is a barn in north Alabama

 ( Mud Bottom area-near the Elk River) 

where my husband grew up.

  It was a neighbor's barn and holds many fond memories for Charles, of times spent hanging out with his brothers and friends here.

 To a country kid,  in those bygone times, a barn like this was a cool place to spend  your leisure time.

This picture is one of many I have taken

 of this barn over the years. 

It amazes me that so many barns in the south are still standing and , in many cases, are still in use. This one in particular is still in good shape...to be 100 years old or older!

I wonder if farm kids of today still  enjoy the simple pleasures of time spent  in and around old barns like this.

I hope they do!

Every year we make a trip to the north Alabama where my husband grew up. I enjoy riding around the countryside and seeing many old barns that still stand. My husband has memories and connections to  a lot of them and, especially, to this one.

This barn is on the land where my husband's family lived  for several years - from the time he was a little guy until he was about age 15 - if I remember correctly!

The area was known as Mud Bottom,located near the Elk River.

The house that they lived in is not there anymore

 (having been replaced years ago with a new one)

  but the surrounding fields still have crops of cotton or corn growing each year and the old barn still stands!

We live in the country and have a rustic  solid board fence along one side of our property. It's the perfect place for my husband to put some of the old farm things of the past that he likes to collect. I like them too-which makes it good!

  :)

Time and weather exposure only serve to make them more appealing- IMO!

is drawn to things like this; and, to be honest-
so am I! :)

We stopped at a junk yard (on a recent trip to North West Florida)
and found the neatest collection of old farm implements!

I liked the shadows these old machines cast!

Hi Folks,

Welll...in case you're wondering how my new goats are doing...

... happily, the 4 new ones adapted very well in their new home. 'April' -the original girl we had- took right to those new young ones!

Only one little problem has developed...
(or perhaps-'developed' isn't the right term to use...haha)
Let me explain... :)

A few days ago Alli and Tina were up here and they were out with Gabbo (Charles) looking at the goats...I was not out there!

When they came in Alli says...
"Ginga, there's a problem!"

Of course I acted in the usual, expected, alarmed way, saying,
"What! What?!?"

She then, reluctantly, says...
" 'Junie Rose' is not a girl!"

"WHAT!!"

Then Gabbo says...
"...and maybe not a boy either!!"

"WHAT??"

Oh my!
( You see-in the past we DID have a goat that was, clearly, BOTH SEXES!! It's true!)

Well, I was dismayed, to say the least...especially since I had picked the prettiest one to name for me...and-and-and...now this! I guess this was 'pay -back' for naming the pretty one for myself!

LOL- You must keep in mind this is my family talking - NOT me!


How this all came to light about the goat and was noticed by my family as they watched them was like this...

Alli - as she watched them, says...
" Gabbo, are you sure 'Junie Rose' is a girl, because she's peeing from a different spot!"

Lo and behold, Gabbo and Tina had to agree that Alli was right!

They were all surprised because the man at the auction sold them all as 'girls!'

Alli told me later that she said to the others...
"So who tells Ginga, because she'll freak out?" :)

It was decided that Alli would come tell me this news! She did-and, yes, I was quite taken aback, you might say!

I then questioned Gabbo about this little goat's gender...How he knew...If he knew for sure what the deal was!! I really didn't want it to be not clearly-one or the other sex!

Besides-I would have to come up with a new name...a BOY name -or worse, an 'IT' name!
( Perhaps using the J. and R. ...of Junie Rose )

He hadn't examined it closely but he says to me...
"Well- for sure it has no... 'Goat-Nads!'"

(Oh my goodness!...A family of comedians here!!)

Charles did determine later that the little guy IS a boy...but not developed -AT ALL- and will be useless in reproduction!

Oh, well! I want to just keep him anyway - not separate him from the others! They are all content together! :) And he IS pretty!

I decided to name him "Joker!"
(unless someone can suggest a better name for me to give him!)

In other farm news...

This is Lucy...having fun on my computer desk recently!
...And-YES- she is still named 'Lucy !' :) (Not Ricky!)

Life on the farm...kinda laid back.

These are some more country scenes from our recent trip to Alabama!

My husband, Charles, and I enjoy all things country and the highlights of our trips back home to visit the folks are our rides together, out in the country.

The barn scenes were taken at his old home place where he grew up!
The original barn still stands!



The one of me and the tractor is just a 'pretty tractor' that we stopped to admire! :) It was for sale...but-no-we didn't buy it!



The last pictures are of a treasure trove (junk yard) of old farm implements we saw on our way home yesterday!

























Yes! You might say we're kinda weird ...lol- but we're weird in many of the same ways so that makes it fun!

I love seeing old barns and farm buildings and everything 'country!'
I am especially fond of this little log building in north Alabama because it's part of my husbands memories as a small boy growing up there in the 30s & 40s.


This cotton shed still stands!

Reunion and Country scenes! Post #7

We didn't spend much time riding around but we did get out to the old home place at Mud Bottom ~ and also to the place where the little log cotton shed still stands!
( but just barely)

Charlie has a story about this cotton shed.

In the past I had fantasies of us buying this shed. dismantling and moving it and rebuilding it- log for log- on our place here in Florida. But on close examination of it this year we can see it's too far gone for that...even if it could be bought!

AHHH- but I will keep taking a picture as long as it stands...and probably after it falls into a heap !

We also went to the Mud Bottom home place. This is the barn that was there when Charles was a kid but in his day it was not painted!

There's a new house on the property and the old barn is still in use as far as we could tell.

These are the fields Charlie's family farmed. This year the crop is soy beans. Last year it was cotton!















Oh, my! I guess I will have to finish up later with my People Pictures at the reunion!

A ride in the country and the Reunion! ~ Post #6 ~

On Friday we left my brother's house pretty early and headed north to Athens.

Here are a few shots of the old town square of Athens. You still get a feel of the past here and I like that. This is where my husband and his family would come on Saturdays and later, in his teens, where C. would come with friends to hang out!


Note on some of the pics:

That old brick wall is fabulous! It's the exterior wall of one building and will be the interior wall of a little courtyard entrance to another shop - or restaurant, maybe! I just love old brick!!

The UG White Hardware is where Charles' bike came from. (the story of Jake, in several posts, starts -here!)

This whole town and all of this part of Alabama are BIG Alabama football fans, and you can see the evidence of it painted on most of the storefronts in town! Also on most North Alabama walls you will see pictures of Bear Bryant, the beloved , former Alabama coach!
( My brother's house has "Bear" on the wall!!)

That statue on the courthouse lawn is a civil war soldier!

I can imagine the men folk sitting on benches in front of the courthouse, whittling, as all men seemed to do in the past!
(Do men whittle these days? I don't think so!)

Charles says his dad, Mr. Boyd, referred to the gathering of whittling old men in front of the courthouse (of which he was one) as...the Dead Pecker Corner!!

LOL! I know- kinda off color...but I just report... you decide here! :)

We wanted to have time to ride out in the country to see some of the places of my husband's youth; not that there is much left except the old barns-and the memories! I love that the barns are left ...but I can see a decline in their conditions, from one year to the next!

For instance...this one!

This is the one Charles remembers as the Maples barn and was/is on the place of the over-seer of the farm that my husband's family rented, as well as several other farms in Mud Bottom!

This Weekend

This weekend has been a strange mix of happy and sad-and a lot of other emotions thrown in all together. Just typical of life in general, I suppose!

The 'sad' was attending the funeral yesterday for a cousin here in Ocala. I hadn't seen her in awhile but had love for her and so the news of her passing was hard. It's always sad, especially with younger people and, to me, she was of the younger generation. (Tho, at age 57, just 10 years younger than me)

...So, yesterday was a somber day, with the funeral service and the gathering afterwards. But I did see some folks I hadn't seen in a long time!

My cousin Inez ( up for the funeral) is at my sister's house until Tuesday. We invited them over today for lunch. (my sis, BIL and my cousin) We had a nice meal and visit!

Tina and Alli came by too, for awhile! (Alli did some stuff for me...she fixed my header on my new 'Farm Life of the Past ' blog! I kept messing up!!!! BTW- I posted more there today!

Here's a pic of Alli and my cousin. Not very good but it's all I got this time! :)









WOW! 9:00 PM already! And I still have my animals to feed! Guess they're wondering if I've forgotten them tonight!
