A ride in the country and the Reunion! ~ Post #6 ~

On Friday we left my brother's house pretty early and headed north to Athens.

Here are a few shots of the old town square of Athens. You still get a feel of the past here and I like that. This is where my husband and his family would come on Saturdays and later, in his teens, where C. would come with friends to hang out!

Note on some of the pics:

That old brick wall is fabulous! It's the exterior wall of one building and will be the interior wall of a little courtyard entrance to another shop - or restaurant, maybe! I just love old brick!!

~~~
The UG White Hardware is where Charles' bike came from. (the story of Jake, in several posts, starts -here!)
~~~

This whole town and all of this part of Alabama are BIG Alabama football fans, and you can see the evidence of it painted on most of the storefronts in town! Also on most North Alabama walls you will see pictures of Bear Bryant, the beloved , former Alabama coach!
( My brother's house has "Bear" on the wall!!)

~~~
That statue on the courthouse lawn is a civil war soldier!
~~~

I can imagine the men folk sitting on benches in front of the courthouse, whittling, as all men seemed to do in the past!
(Do men whittle these days? I don't think so!)

Charles says his dad, Mr. Boyd, referred to the gathering of whittling old men in front of the courthouse (of which he was one) as...the Dead Pecker Corner!!

LOL! I know- kinda off color...but I just report... you decide here! :)

~~~
~~~

We wanted to have time to ride out in the country to see some of the places of my husband's youth; not that there is much left except the old barns-and the memories! I love that the barns are left ...but I can see a decline in their conditions, from one year to the next!

For instance...this one!

This is the one Charles remembers as the Maples barn and was/is on the place of the over-seer of the farm that my husband's family rented, as well as several other farms in Mud Bottom!

~~~
Tomorrow I will conclude with a few more country scenes and the reunion pics!
~~
We're having all the kids here tomorrow- so I have stuff to do to prepare! :) Looking forward to a busy but happy day tomorrow!
Have a great Saturday!
Love, Reign O'er Me
Music-music-music!
I found this on Youtube just now! This is from the 2006 tour of the world's greatest Rock band- 'The Who!'
IMHO - of course! :)
Last night, after listening to another favorite classic rock band -Pink Floyd- 'The Wall'- I wanted to follow up with The Who- 'Quadrophenia.'
Both of these Rock-Opera albums ( AND the bands) are great...I love the way all the songs are loosely connected in telling a story! :) I just get caught up in these kinds of albums - so much so I found it was after 2:00 AM when I finished up with QUAD and decided I better get some rest! lol
'Love, Reign O'er Me' is from the Who album, 'Quadrophenia' and is one of my favorite songs by THE WHO - or by anyone, for that matter!
*** These guys are amazing, to still be so good after so many years!***
(check out labels for more WHO posts)
Enjoy!
Later:
Went out into my back yard and saw this....with web reaching between two of the huge Live Oaks. I knew I couldn't get a good picture, as this spider web was high above my head, but I was pleased with the way this turned out in black and white!
And seeing the spider web and having THE WHO music already in my head, it naturally, led me to this!
Enjoy!
My back yard...
One of those days when I feel overwhelmed... So much I need to do- so little energy and inclination to do any of it!
I took a walk in my back yard to fiddle with my camera. Last time I took pics I had something screwed up! Seems to be back to normal now!
(One "+" for my day!)
The summer has taken a toll on both Charles and me...especially me -as I have not been able to keep up my garden at all this time! The weeds and vines have taken over! Sad but true!
Here's some pics of The General and Nighty! Looks like they may be lamenting the condition of Ginga's back yard this year!
(so sorry, guys!)
This is the playhouse (of bygone days) as seen today through a spider web.
...And some shots of THE WALL and probably the last Water Lily of summer...
Moth??
I found this big moth in my yard this morning! Well-I assume it's a moth of some kind! Does anyone know what it is?
...And the brownish one is one Charles found a few nights ago. He had gone to Wal-Mart for something...found this one outside the door as he was leaving! Brought it home to show me! After looking at it and getting it's photo, we let it go!
Chas. says the 2 are the same ...that they change color! I'm not sure! Hope to find some info on them...just so I know!
:) Useful information!
Charles has this neat wall he put up when we first moved here, which he has put all manner of junk on- mostly old farm impliments and parts of same! Even has a goat's skull there! It's a great place to find fancy spider webs! That's where this moth was! (not in a web, but on the wall) One day I found a snake against that wall...and those possums found that old birdhouse to live in there! I LOVE checking out that wall! ;)
Maybe I'm kinda weird! Do ya think?
