Midweek Blus_Dec 14, 2011_ Blue Skis Santa

 ~See more Midweek Blues posts here~
~~~
"Lets Ski," says this happy santa!
LOL - OK - I collect Santas (Kid that I am!!)
and I like this guy a lot!
He's probably not anything so special to most observers! I got him at Wal-Mart one year in the 'after Christmas' mark down sales!
I like his bright blue skis and his big, inviting, smile that just seems to say,
"Come join me - Let's Ski!"
:)
Snow in Ocala!
___
When we got up to get ready for our day trip to Winter Haven to visit the folks...THIS is what we saw! Yes - SNOW in Ocala!
We saw flurries, off and on, the 2 hours it took us to get to my cousins house.There was small amounts of snow on some roofs and along the roadside and on cars! One car passed us with a build-up of snow and with a small snowman some enthused person had built- riding on the trunk! :) You got to understand this snow thing is a novelty for us here in Florida! :)
When we got to my cousins house my sister Joy and her husband were already there. ( C. and I had stopped for breakfast at a Hardee's!) The others arrived in about an hour!
We got a few pics of us all together before going out to eat at Red Lobster!
OK-
...So we're home and facing another cold, cold night! My cats are all inside tonight because I don't have the heart to put them on the porch...I sure hope they don't mess up too badly while I'm sleeping! Got a litter pan set up for them so hope they will use it! My cats are not 100% indoor cats (except for Lucy.) but they like being in, in this cold weather. The 2 big guys have found a cozy, soft spot on my living room couch .
BTW-Lucy seems to be getting back to normal and is eating and drinking water...still rests a lot but she's found a good spot for that beside the fridge... I put a pad there for her. She likes the extra warmth of that motor running. She discovered that spot a few days ago! (Smart little cat!)
Chris and Joy were just here to get water...seems their water pipes have frozen ...hopefully Not burst! Oh, man!!
I will be happy to see the end of this cold weather!
Prancer
This is my all time favorite Christmas movie. I try to watch it  at least once every year just before Christmas.
This is the kind of little girl I was in many ways.  (especially the total trust and belief in santa that she has- and in God and heaven. )
Oh! It's just a most endearing movie to watch - IMO-  The total movie can be found on Youtube, in 12 parts! I bet if you watch this first part you will want to watch all of it! ;)  I watched it all tonight- while baking my 'Magic Cookie Bars.'
I LOVE, LOVE,  LOVE IT!!
 How about you?
Sky Watch Friday & a Joke (Ski)
It's Sky Watch Friday again!
(go here for other sky pictures around the world)
Here are some sky scenes from North Carolina in 2006!
~~~

The famous Olympic skier Picabo Street
(pronounced Peek-A-Boo)
is not
just an athlete.
She is now a nurse currently working at the Intensive Care
Unit
of a large metropolitan hospital.
She is not permitted to answer
the hospital telephones.
It causes too much confusion
when she answers the
phone and says . . . . Picabo, ICU.

:)

(A good clean joke is hard to find these days --- pass it on! )

I enjoyed watching this!
I bet you will, too!

Those Border Collies are very smart dogs! And fun ! :)

...AND ~ It reminded me of this very cool youtube video I got in an email today!

LOL!

VERY COOL, indeed!
You'll agree!

Enjoy!

Time goes on...

Yes!
Just one more day 'til our Christmas Eve party.....and I am not ready!

Today I still have baking to do. I made a (DOUBLE) batch of magic cookie bars yesterday... but they were left in the oven just a couple minutes too long! (5- probably!!) They are too hard! :( Not sure if I'll re-do them ...or just pretend they are ok! Knowing me, tho, (as well as I do,) I'd say I will probably do them over! Not that these less than perfect ones will be dumped... You can bet every morsel will be eaten - perfect or not!

~~~
Lol- reminds me of how some Beatles fans talk about Beatles music...saying that even the
worst of the Beatles music is better than the best of other bands!!
WELL...that goes for these Magic Cookie Bars, too! They are better than most even at their worst!
~~~

Last night my SIL. Marc got home- and he stopped by here... Had to use my computer to get his trucking business taken care of. I was unable to get any blogging/computer time in. I missed that time I usually take for myself- after dinner- to relax! I wanted to listen to Dan's music also...I hope to get to do that tonight! I'm counting on it!!!

~~~
I had trouble sleeping last night as I usually do when things are thrown off track for me...
Turned my light off but tossed and turned , unable to get to sleep- until , finally, I decide to give my reading one more go... I reach to turn my light on and the dang bulb blew!! I did not give in to the uselessness of trying, again, to get to sleep! I'd done that for at least an hour! So I rambled around in the semi-darkness until I found a bulb I could steal from another lamp in the room! (all the while muttering and whimpering in my frustrations... if not worse!) I went through the routine once more (of reading) until I finally felt I could get to sleep!
LOL! Some of my nights would make very funny videos.....
~~~

Oh! I got the good news yesterday that my grandson, Zach, made it back safely from his trip to Chicago! (Just in time, looks like, from the news reports I saw today!) Had a lot of fun...saw snow.... wants to MOVE up there!!!

No!

I sure hope not!

Got to get going now and decide just what I need to do here to pull this all together! :)

It'll work out!

Love,
Junie Rose

cabin in the snow

In my photo search today I came across this interesting picture.
Well...interesting to this snow deprived southern girl, anyway!

This was sent to me from NC , by my sister and BIL. in 1999. I think this was the first winter they were there after moving from Florida. This was a little cabin near where they lived!

I love the lonely little cabin in the snowy woods!

Speaking of snow...

( Click on pics to enlarge )

OK !

Visiting around the blogs the past few days I have seen a lot of snowy scenes and heard a lot of snowy tales. As for me, there have been very few snow days in my entire life! I remember one snowy Christmas Eve from my early childhood!

And then there was this!!

~~~~~~
...And there was our California trip in 1986!
Our daughter and 2 grandsons had left us just before Christmas to reunite with Marc at Fort Ord in Monterey, Ca. Marc had just returned from a whole year, stationed overseas, but now the family could be together. Fort Ord, Monterey, Ca. was a great place to be stationed and we were happy for the kids...but sad for us!
Up until that time we had been with the kids all their lives! After they left us in Dec. '85- we had decided to visit them in January '86! :) ( I tell ya, it was rough letting those boys go!!)
...Besides... who wouldn't like the idea of a first time trip to California - yah-that had it's appeal, too! :)
~~~~~~

These pictures are from a trip we made from Fort Ord, (where the kids were living in the Army housing there) to Placerville area and on to Lake Tahoe!

Beautiful scenery! In fact- every part of California- from LA to San Francisco...and on thru the farming areas of Salinas Valley...everything we saw was just wonderful! Every part has it's own special beauty!

Anyway-in the area of Lake Tahoe, we saw this...SNOW!!! It wasn't snowing but there was plenty on the ground! Dan, at almost 3 years, had fun making snowballs...Brian , not yet walking, didn't have a really close encounter!

It was lots of fun for us!

~~For me though, the main attraction was those two little guys at the top of my post! :) ~~

Snow Babies!

This is my two older grandsons and my daughter Tina, with a first encounter with snow!
(well, not the very first because they had seen some snow in Northern California the winter before.)
They were in Fort Campbell,
Ky, Army base home!

They had enough snow to make that nice little snow-man!
The boys' ages were almost 5 & 3 years! (1988)

Not long after this, Tina and my grandboys moved to Ocala and have been near us ever since!
So many happy times...

Snowy Banner Elk and onward...

We're on the road again...putting the 'cold dip' behind us. My one pair of warm shoes are beyond use now, so I have to make-do with my socks and sandals until I can find a Wal-Mart to get something warmer!

...I start to realize the mistake I made in not doing more to my hair! It has become a complete, flyaway mess! In the end I could do nothing more than put it in a twist and clamp it down!

Like this!

But notice-I'm still smling!

I couldn't spend much time on the ground in Banner Elk (without warm shoes) so the pics here were mostly taken from the car! A good bit of snow in Banner Elk, as some of the pictures show! You can see snow on the ski slopes in some of them!

After a while in Banner Elk we decided to drive on. It was either that or go back to Boone to the Wal-Mart, as there were no shoes to be had in Banner Elk! Charles will not backtrack -ever- so we went south again! This time we were heading for Hendersonville!

~~~But we had got a little taste of winter! In my case, a little more than I had expected!
~~~I will conclude our trip in my next post!~~~

The Water Wheel

~~~
We returned to the motel and loaded our car. Our plan was to continue on to Banner Elk, which was less than 20 miles south of Boone. Our intention was to see as much of NC as possible and we had never actually been to the town of Banner Elk! We wanted to see what this little ski town was like!
So off we go, after taking another quick run through Boone! We saw a funny sight on the way out…a couple of joggers! (Young guys - students, I would guess) Their top parts were bundled up nicely but their legs were exposed to the weather! Charlie remarked that one of the guys legs were purple- tinted from the cold! … At that time, I couldn’t imagine anyone being that cold!
I was decked out in my little red hat and matching mittens…feeling cozy and fine; my brand new Nikes keeping my feet toasty-warm!
A little ways out from the main part of Boone we see something we just couldn’t pass by! Well, we passed it by but made a hasty U-turn to get an up close and personal look!
It was this!
On a previous trip we had stayed at this very motel and remembered seeing this ‘Water Wheel’ from that time. With the freezing cold weather and snow lightly falling, it was quite a sight and we knew we Must get some pictures of this!
The area around this wheel was well maintained with a board walkway that led to a mulched pathway around behind the wheel-for close-up views from all sides!
The water troth with running water feeding into the wheel had icicles up to 3 feet long, hanging down! I lightly touched one, and to my surprise, it came loose in my hand!
We walked down the path around behind the wheel! My, what a sight, with the ice clinging to every part of it-and snow still, gently, falling!
My husband got this picture of me with the water wheel behind me! (In my cute little hat!
)
~~~~~~

…This next part I have been reluctant to tell-but I will try to tell it in a most humorous way…lest you feel sorry for me- or (God Forbid) think me (or even Charlie) stupid! ;)

Please keep in mind that this was all new stuff for us…all this ice and snow…wooly caps…mittens…freezing ponds…

OK…also –I am used to taking any suggestion my husband gives me - especially in fun situations like this!

…After taking a couple pictures on the walkway he said, ”Stand on that corner and let me get you with the wheel directly behind you!”

I did! When my second foot touched the rock ledge... YES! - I was in the water!
(Neither of us had noticed that the ledge was iced over!)

COLD!

I hit the water and went under! I’m sure I tried to grab onto the wooden part that held the wheel up…I know this from the bruises on my right arm and underarm…but I don’t know how I managed to bruise the left hip!
On reflection, I think it was a small miracle that I didn't hit the back of my head!

All I knew at the time is that I was DANG cold…and I was thinking,
“Oh my! Let me out of here before someone sees me!”

Although I went in over my head, the depth of the water was little more than waist high on me. Attempts by Charles to pull me out, failed! ...but I was able to get through the frame that held the wheel and walk up the incline and climb out!

…lol- and I bet you’re wondering if Charlie captured all this action with the camera…

At the time he was so scared- all he could do was to rush over to see if I was ok and try to help me get out!

He DID mention later that he should have got the picture of me falling…blogging material - don’t you know!! I told him I probably wouldn’t have taken too kindly to that!!

Luckily, we still had time to go back to our motel so I could get a hot shower and change clothes! (I felt sure the housekeepers there would not have cleaned the room yet -if ever- and I was right!)
I laughed all the way back at the utter absurdity of this icy fall into that pond!

I quickly shed the icy, wet clothes and got into the hottest water I could stand- just rinsing my hair! (Not bothering with shampoo or a creme rinse…a mistake!)
A hot shower never felt so good!

We went back by the Water Wheel...Charles had hopes of getting to my hat (with one of the long plow handles he had bought) but he was not able to get it! Here you see the poor frozen little thing- in it's watery grave!

…So we continued onward…

Snowy Boone -Oct 2006

We arrived in Boone late in the afternoon on Monday. After two full days of 'Leaf Looking' and winding, mountain roads, we were a bit frazzled and needing some rest.

We chose badly on the motel-for purly sentimental reasons. We had stayed at this particular place in our last trip to Boone so were drawn to it again. Sadly, it had become very rundown since we were there several years ago. Nevertheless, we kept the room; the beds were comfortable and clean and the shower was hot- the two main things for us! (PLUS-the price was $49.00-a big + for my husband! :) )

Snow had been predicted and , indeed, tiny white flakes were floating around when we ventured out for dinner. They looked like some sort of little white fly, flitting around!

This snowfall was something new for this Florida girl! We had seen snow on the ground in north California 20+ years ago, but I don't remember ever actually seeing it snow! ( I'm sure in my early childhood in Alabama I had seen it- but that's lost to me now!) Surfice to say-it was an interesting experience for us both-having the snow! It seemed to have been put in the plan just for our pleasure-this early snowfall!

Snowy Boone Encounter - Oct. 2006

We arrived in Boone late in the afternoon on Monday. After two full days of 'Leaf Looking' and winding, mountain roads, we were a bit frazzled and needing some rest.

We chose badly - on the motel - for purely sentimental reasons. We had stayed at this particular place in our last trip to Boone so were drawn to it again. (PLUS-the price was $49.00-a big + for my husband! :) ...never mind the the small pieces of dry dog food in the corner, there! )

Snow had been predicted and, indeed, tiny white flakes were floating around when we ventured out for dinner. These snowflakes reminded me of some sort of little white flies, flitting around!

Early the next morning this is what we found...a small accumulation of the white stuff on our car and more of the little white flakes falling! We went for a Bojangles Chicken Biscuit and coffee and watched it fall in ever increasing swirls! This - a very festive and wintery scene!

Here is Charlie being silly-making a snowball!

~~~~
I wanted to get a little more in harmony with the snowy scene so decided I needed to go shop for a hat and mittens- to make my pictures more festive! Besides - the cold weather conditions were doing weird things to my hair and a hat would cover it! In Florida my hair is naturally wavy and managable; here it was dry and fly away! ...LOL- I guess suitable for the Halloween season-on reflection now! However-with the snowy conditions I was thinking more of the Christmas season! A fluffy red hat would be just the thing! I found just the hat at Wal-Mart!
...so- back to the motel and we're off for more adventures...
My cute hat and witchy hair...
~~~My hair was in for even worse times... so was the hat!~~~

...more later...
